Tim Sullivan started thinking in April about this year’s design for the cornfield at Circle S Farm, his family’s farm in Grove City. Around the same time, he started thinking about proposing to his girlfriend, Caroline.
“I really wanted to propose to Caroline and do something big she would never forget,” Tim said.
Tim got his family on board and started working with a crop consulting company to come up with a design to use to plant his corn crop and propose to Caroline.
Then, like any good farmer, he hoped the weather would cooperate.
“If we have a big rainstorm, it could wash the plants out, or if it is really dry, the seed might not come up perfectly, but we had perfect planting conditions and everything came up just right,” Tim said.
The next step was to get Caroline in the air, before a passing plane or drone noticed the design and revealed his secret plan on social media.
On Monday, Tim told Caroline he wanted to explore pilot lessons and invited her to come along.
They got into a small plane at the Madison County airport.
They flew over the field, and on the first pass, Caroline didn’t see the field. They circled back, until Caroline read the message and learned the reason for Tim’s flight.
Over the loud drone of the engine, Tim popped the question and put a ring on Caroline’s finger.
Back on the ground, he got down on one knee.
“I was shocked,” Caroline said. “I was processing how much work it had to take to get this done and I was like 'I can’t believe someone would put that much effort and months of planning for me to do something so special.' I was pretty impressed.”
Caroline said she was only a little bit suspicious when Tim told her he would be wearing a nice outfit for the “flight lesson”.
“I was like 'OK, this is for sure something interesting is happening,'” she said.
Both Tim and Caroline are farmers and have bonded over their love of agriculture. In fact, they both work for competing corn seed companies.
“Just one of those things, when you know and we knew pretty early on. We were both excited about it and said let’s run with this,” Tim said.
Tim and Caroline hope to get married next summer. They plan to find some way to incorporate the theme of corn.
