Tim and Lindsey Pierce are adjusting to life with a newborn — their first baby — at their home in London, Ohio.
“He’s got three things on his mind: clean me, feed me and let me sleep,” Tim said.
Baby Thaddeus was born on July 26 at 5:48 a.m., but his story begins in 1994, long before his birth.
Tim and Lindsey always knew they wanted to start a family, and after years of struggling with infertility, they began the process of embryo adoption through Nightlight Christian Adoptions.
The agency connects couples like the Pierces with donors of unused embryos to give them a chance at life.
The embryo that would become Thaddeus was created by an Oregon woman named Linda in 1994 and has sat unused in freezers ever since.
When the agency connected Linda with the Pierces, their dreams of having a family started to become a reality.
“We were like, 'Why not? Why not give it a shot?'” Lindsey said.
Dr. John Gordon at Rejoice Fertility in Knoxville, Tennessee, transferred the embryo to Lindsey in November.
Nine months later, and nearly 31 years after the embryo was created, she gave birth to a healthy baby boy. It is believed to be the longest an embryo has been frozen before birth.
“We didn’t give up. We knew there was a plan. We just didn’t know what it would look like,” Lindsey said.
For now, Tim and Lindsey continue to soak up the newborn stage with their almost two-week-old.
“No pun intended but he’s very chill. He’s [a] very calm little guy,” Lindsey said.
When Thaddeus grows old enough, they plan to tell him about his embryo adoption story.
“We will throw in, 'By the way, you broke a record little guy, didn’t you?'” Lindsey said.
The Pierces are in touch with Thaddeus’ donor mother, Linda, who is now in her 60s. Thaddeus also has a 30-year-old biological sister.
“And he is already an uncle because she has a daughter,” the Pierces said.
Tim and Lindsey are hopeful they will be able to give Thaddeus a sibling. They have adopted two more embryos, both frozen since 2004, to be transferred to Lindsey when they are ready.
