Vacation Village, the new resort in Mission Bay was formally opened this morning with a treasure hunt. San Diegans followed treasure maps to find various prizes scattered around the village. Among the prizes were autographs by San Diego Charger star Jack Kemp. Other prizes included bottles of perfume for the ladies, straw hats and ice cream for the youngsters. The treasure hunt was sponsored by the "Pink Ladies" --members of the San Diego County Hospital Auxiliary. After sifting through more than 500 entries, a board of leading designers, engineers and architects has awarded top honors to the most imaginative uses of modern steel. Among their choices. Vacation Village tower at San Diego's Mission Bay. Oscar awards for buildings, products and other things we buy and use. A conveyor belt made with steel wire so it can carry loads around corners also came in for honors along with massive spillway gates for a dam in Pakistan and a church in Missouri that looks like a big wedding cake. Modern items like a pedestal table that folds compactly when not in use. This American Iron and Steel Institute film further evidence of why San Diego has been named an "All-America" city.
