Description
We’re looking into the history of the development of Interstate 5 in San Diego. In these six clips from 1966 and 1967, see its evolution—from creating interchanges to building bridges, highway pioneers created a well-planned freeway system that has long been praised. Original scripts are included before each clip. Jonathan Dunn-Rankin interviewed Jacob Dekema. Jacob "Jake" Dekema (1915-2017) was a prominent figure in California's transportation history, particularly known for his role in developing the Southern California freeway system. As the District Director for Caltrans District 11 (which included San Diego, Imperial, and parts of Riverside counties), he oversaw the construction of a vast network of highways and connectors, earning him the nickname "Mr. Caltrans".
