3/22/72 The Blue Angels...the Navy's Flight Demonstration Team staged a prevue show this afternoon for a limited audience at the Miramar Naval Air Station. Performing today were six pilots... Lt. Cmdr Don Bently... Captain Mike Murphy... the only Marine in the group... Navy Lt Bill Beardsley, Lt Bill Switzer... Lt Skip Umstead and Lt Steve Lambert. About 100 men and woman make up the Blue Angels' team.
The Blue Angels were here to take part in a special training session tomorrow. Their winter quarters are in El Centro. Today's prevue show lasted about 30-minutes and included demonstrations of three of their favorite formations... the echelon, the diamond and the delta. There also was a solo performance featuring a maximum performance maneuver at speeds up to 600 miles an hour. And they also have a special formation...a salute to the Prisoners-of-war, to kick-off POW week beginning next Sunday. Invited to watch today's show were members of the San Diego Navy league and families of the men stationed at Miramar. The Blue Angels have made several appearances at Miramar over the years. Their next regular show, however, is planned for El Centro, on Sunday the 26th of March.
