As families everywhere head back to school, many parents are thinking about how to keep their kids fueled throughout the day for a full day of learning. Back-to-school season means a fresh routine and the need for time management, but meal time doesn’t have to be stressful. Registered Dietitian, mom and Director of Nutrition at Danone North America, Amanda Blechman joins our Laura Cavanaugh to share tips to keep kids nourished and energized, as well as quick, easy and stress-free meal ideas the kids will love.
Breakfast is about speed and nutrition. Blechman says start the day off right with a nutrient-dense breakfast with lower sugar options. A bowl of cereal topped with Silk Kids and paired with fruit makes for a balanced breakfast made easy.
A fortified plant-based milk alternative like Silk Kids provides protein, Vitamin D and potassium, which are nutrients that kids really need.
For a time-saver, make-ahead breakfasts like Oat Bars paired with Silk Kids and fruit is a balanced breakfast in under five minutes.
For a nutrient-dense lunchbox , Blechman’s blueprint includes hitting all five food groups with different textures. A good example might be a turkey sandwich, grapes, carrots, Greek yogurt with ranch seasoning for veggie dipping and a Danimals Smoothie.
Danimals Smoothies provide calcium and Vitamin D, which are important nutrients for growing kids.
“I always pack something fun to put a smile on my kids’ faces,” said Blechman.
At the end of the day, Blechman says try look for ease, balance and variety in snacks and meals.
“Don’t forget that a lot of packaged, ready-to-eat foods can be just as nutrient-dense as homemade,” said Blechman. “It’s okay to lean in on the things that make your life easier.”
