Every day, millions of American children across the country ride to school on diesel-fueled school buses. Those emissions from a diesel bus can spread exhaust with harmful toxins that can affect young lungs.
A new survey indicates that parents are ready for something cleaner. Tucker Perkins, President and CEO of the Propane Education & Research Council joins our Laura Cavanaugh about PERC’s goal of providing a cleaner, safer bus ride to school for students.
The Propane Education & Research Council surveyed parents and educators. The study revealed that 87% of those surveyed thought it was time for their children to ride in a low-emission school bus like a propane-powered school bus.
The exhaust from diesel buses contains pollutants that can cause asthma and bronchitis. With propane buses, that black cloud of exhaust is gone with 96% fewer toxic emissions than traditional diesel buses.
Perkins says propane buses are quieter, which is a much better and safer environment for a child to get to school.
California has been a leader in the movement toward cleaner transportation, awarding a half billion dollars to school districts to help add zero-emission school buses to their fleets.
Currently, some 1500 propane school buses operate in California. San Diego is actively transitioning its school bus fleet away from diesel and toward cleaner alternatives like electric and propane.
“The fact remains almost 400,000 diesel buses still operate,” said Perkins. “Diesel fuel is a fuel of the past. It’s time to give these children a ride in a modern propane bus.”
