Aug. 1 on The Story: For the first time since the pandemic era, Portland is seeing major protests downtown again, many of them railing against the actions of the Trump administration. For some businesses downtown, that was something they prepared for with trepidation, after the damaging protests of 2020 and 2021 contributed to an overall inhospitable environment. But so far this year, the outcome has not been what they expected — instead, the largely peaceful gatherings have flooded downtown with foot traffic and customers for nearby restaurants, becoming a boon to business. That said, there are some exceptions.
