Description
Sept. 15 on The Story: In 2017, city council adopted a resolution declaring Portland a sanctuary city, which means the city and its police bureau will not aid in federal immigration enforcement efforts. The resolution was largely symbolic — for one, Oregon has had a law on the books for decades making the entire state a sanctuary state. Second, resolutions are not binding law. But now, a city councilor wants to change that by making sanctuary policies a part of city code. Proposals from Councilor Sameer Kanal of District 2 would ensure that city staff have a better idea of their role in a sanctuary jurisdiction, and would also prohibit all law enforcement from "intentionally concealing their identities" by wearing masks or refusing to identify themselves.
