Description
In February 2024, Tyler Perry signed a multi-year TV series deal with Netflix.
In his first comedy series on the streaming giant, "Tyler Perry's She the People" follows Antoinette Dunkerson (Terri J. Vaughn), who becomes the first female Black lieutenant governor of Mississippi, but she realizes her new job involves working for a sexist, condescending governor (Robert Craighead).
"We get to watch her as she journeys through this political space that can be very brash, very harsh, very all the -isms," said Vaughn ("The Steve Harvey Show," "All of Us"). "We watch her as she deals with all of that, while also balancing her personal life with her family, who is very active in her life, very bold and loud in her life."
And part of Dunkerson's family is her outspoken mother, played by Jo Marie Payton ("Family Matters," "The Proud Family")
"Traveling this journey with Terri and this situation, it's like a dream come true, especially since I feel like Terri and I – as long as we've been in the business – I think we can tackle some of these subjects that we will take and temper them the right way so that you can laugh after you find out who you are," Payton said. "We got some challenges that we have to deal with, and the best way to deal with them is dealing with you, your soul, your spirit and the truth, and we hope that's when the the funny comes in."
The first eight episodes of the first season of "Tyler Perry's She the People" are available to stream beginning Thursday, May 22 on Netflix. The second half of the first season comes out Aug. 14.
