Description
There have been thousands of adaptations of "Romeo & Juliet" in more than 100 languages around the world.
But director/writer Timothy Scott Bogart ("Spinning Gold," "Touched") wanted to retell the most famous love story of all time in a new way —"Juliet & Romeo."
"The name switch actually happened a little bit accidentally," said Bogart, who initially started with the title "Verona" to reflect that the earliest iteration – more than 115 years before William Shakespeare wrote the play – of these characters and storyline came from an Italian author in 1476.
During post-production, Bogart said he was on his computer with the titles, and for whatever reason, switched the characters' names and knew he found what he was looking for.
"I always wanted it to be a story that was larger than what we thought, but that people could understand it was based on something they certainly thought they knew," Bogart said.
"Juliet & Romeo" opens in theaters nationwide Friday, May 9.
