Description
In a surprise move, state lawmakers decided to advance a plan to require automated external defibrillators in schools. 13 Investigates' Sidelined series showcased how lawmakers previously watered down a 2023 AED bill.
"Having an AED in school is not enough,” Julie West said. “You have to have the plan."
In 2023, lawmakers passed Jake’s Law in honor of West’s son who died from sudden cardiac arrest in September 2013. West said it was a step in the right direction but is determined to make the devices mandatory for school events.
On Wednesday, March 26, West was at the statehouse to advocate for an amendment to House Bill 1002, requiring schools to have the devices at certain school events and a plan in place to use AEDs in an emergency.
