Description
Hours after President Trump slapped new taxes on imported steel and aluminum, the EU responded with new retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods.
That's the backdrop for the Taoiseach of Ireland's visit to the White House Wednesday. It's usually a largely ceremonial affair around St. Patrick's Day, but given the Trump administration's suddenly antagonistic approach to trade allies, the day's events might have a different tone.
All of this happening as thousands of Department of Education employees learn they no longer have jobs. The president campaigned on eliminating the Education Department and is taking the first steps to do that, despite needing congressional approval to do so.
NBC's Aaron Gilchrist has the latest from Washington.
