Indiana lawmakers are debating whether making school board members pick a political party would help voters make decisions. School boards wield a lot of control, helping to decide what books are in your children’s school library, their dress code and what the curriculum they study. In recent years, some school board races have become increasingly partisan, with those races seeing money pouring in, sometimes from donors who don’t even live in Indiana. But you wouldn't know that looking at the ballot. Right now, when someone runs for school board, a candidate is not required to say to which political party they belong. No party ID appears next to their name on the ballot. Senate Bill 287, authored by Sen. Gary Byrne (R-District 47), Sen. Chris Garten (R-District 45) and Sen. Blake Doriot (R-District 12) would change that.
