In his feature film debut, director/writer/producer Kyle Hausmann-Stokes is recounting experiences from his time in the military. "My Dead Friend Zoe" is a dark comedy about Merit, a U.S. Army Afghanistan veteran (Sonequa Martin-Green) who is struggling to reconnect with her family upon returning from duty — mainly because she's taking advice from her dead best friend (Natalie Morales) whom she served with. "(Kyle) decided that he wanted to tell a story that could save lives and give back to those that have been in the military. It's also for people who have not been in the military," said Martin-Green ("The Walking Dead," "Star Trek: Discovery"). "It's about friendship and sacrifice.
