A Lafayette mother, who recently took a plea deal in the shooting death of her 1-year-old son, has been sentenced. Shatia Welch was sentenced Wednesday, Feb. 19 to six years in prison, two years in Tippecanoe County Community Corrections and four years on probation after pleading guilty to one count of neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury. In January, Welch withdrew her previous not guilty plea and has now pleaded guilty to neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury. As a result, the prosecution has dropped all other charges. Welch was facing additional drug charges prior to the agreement. Meanwhile, the child's father, Deonta Johnson, is set for a jury trial on May 19 at 1 p.m. He is charged with multiple drug and child neglect felonies.
