Description
History books can teach us about the Vietnam War. But it's the six-part docuseries, "Vietnam: The War That Changed America," that shows first-person testimony, never-before-seen archival footage and emotional reunions from people who fought together and formed close bonds.
"I'll tell you what it's not about — the big history picture and the politics. This is about the war as it was lived by people in the documentary when they were young and how they feel about it and reuniting them today," said Marine veteran Bill Broyles, who is also an Oscar and Emmy nominee, co-writing "Apollo 13," writing "Cast Away" and co-creating "China Beach." "This is a documentary about deep human experiences that I think can connect to anyone."
Broyles, a lieutenant, was tasked with leading a platoon of men who made it clear from the beginning that they had zero respect for him.
"They didn't want to die for Richard Nixon or Henry Kissinger or me, but they would die for each other, and they were amazing human beings. I learned more from them than I did at Oxford," Broyles said. "Just to get reunited with my impossibly insubordinate radio man who kept me alive and I kept him alive, to be reunited with him – he shows up in his Marine Corps jacket 50 years later – we just had no words."
All six episodes of "Vietnam: The War That Changed America" are released Friday, Jan. 31 on Apple TV+.
