Description
Hamilton County is establishing an "immigration commission," with the goal of enhancing public safety while respecting diversity, according to the sheriff.
The move comes as the lines are blurring between federal agents and local law enforcement.
It's been one week since President Donald Trump took his second oath of office. In those seven days, Indiana lawmakers and elected leaders have followed his lead, putting a renewed focus on immigration, ramping up efforts to work with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and target undocumented immigrants.
On Monday, Jan. 27, the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office became the first law enforcement agency in the state to participate in the 287(g) program. It's a federal program that allows local law enforcement to partner with ICE. Officers can get special training, equipment and allow certain deputies to enforce immigration laws.
