The polar vortex is stretching south from the North Pole, allowing cold air to rush south, as well as the jet stream. We are expecting sub-freezing weather all the way south to the Gulf Coast. There may even be accumulating snow along the Gulf Coast this coming week. To the north, wind chills will dip below -20 degrees in many states. One thing we have to consider is the threat for pipes freezing and bursting across much of the country, east of the Rockies. A rule of thumb we use for pipes freezing and bursting is temperatures staying below positive 20 degrees for at least 4 to 6 hours straight. For some Americans, you'll stay below 20 degrees for 3-4 days straight. The threat for bursting pipes is higher farther south with less insulated homes.
