Description
A jury found Shamar Duncan guilty in the murder of Dutch Corporal Simmie Poetsema outside of a downtown Indianapolis hotel in August 2022.
The jury found 22-year-old Duncan, of Indianapolis, guilty on all four counts: murder, two counts of attempted murder and disorderly conduct.
"The Poetsema family, his fellow soldiers and the surviving victims have continued to show such grace in the face of unimaginable grief under extraordinary circumstances," Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears said in a news release. "Indianapolis is a world-class city, and we will not be defined by the defendant’s actions, but rather by our city’s response in the face of tragedy. It’s through that sense of collaboration and community that we were able to secure justice for Simmie."
