Description
Red dye No. 3, a synthetic food coloring, has been a staple in candy, food and medications for decades.
However, on Wednesday, Jan. 15, the Food and Drug Administration banned the additive after it's been linked to cancer in lab rats.
According to the Environmental Working Group, more than 3,000 products contain the additive.
Food companies now have until 2027 to strip the dye from products.
"There is really no nutritional food benefit to any food dye," said Taylor Parrish, a registered dietician at Riley Children's Hospital.
