Description
Shamar Duncan, 22, is on trial for the murder of 26-year-old Corporal Simmie Poetsema, a Dutch commando who was killed in downtown Indianapolis on Aug. 27, 2022.
Poetsema was a veteran of the war in Afghanistan, having served in the evacuation of Kabul, according to the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf. He was in Indiana to train at Muscatatuck Urban Training Center, near North Vernon in Jennings County.
Poetsema was in Indianapolis with other soldiers when they say they got in a fight with three local men. One of the local men, allegedly Duncan, shot at the soldiers from a truck. Poetsema was killed, and two other soldiers were injured.
