Description
On Friday, Dec. 20, the Indianapolis Airport Authority board of directors approved an agreement to allow the city of Indianapolis to purchase the downtown heliport once it’s decommissioned.
The process started several years ago when the airport authority said the financial burden of the heliport outweighed public value.
In 2022, the airport authority entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the city to work together on redevelopment plans.
Then, in November 2024, the Federal Aviation Administration finally authorized the site's closure on the condition that the airport authority take a variety of next steps, including updating its appraisals for the property, removing all aircraft and equipment, and studying air mobility opportunities in the area.
