Description
To get in front of situations like this, the department uses their Mobile Crisis Assistance Team, or MCAT.
Sgt. Lance Dardeen, who leads this team, told 13News the team is made up of trained IMPD officers and clinicians from Eskenazi Health. He said when police request MCAT on a scene, they use techniques to de-escalate the situation. Once the clinicians talk with the person, they'll provide various resources for future help.
"Having a mental health response team is crucial because we can take our time to get people connected to the appropriate resources," Dardeen said. "We will have to protect the community."
Dardeen says there was not an MCAT team at the shooting scene Thursday.
