Description
A man was critically injured after a carjacking led to an officer-involved shooting on Indy's east side Sunday afternoon.
According to IMPD, officers were initially called to the 1000 block of North Kealing Avenue, which is near 10th Street and North Sherman Drive, shortly before 3:30 p.m. Oct. 27 on a report of a theft.
While officers were investigating the theft report, an uninvolved car approached officers and came to a sudden stop. A woman got out of the vehicle and told officers that she was being held at gunpoint by a man she did not know.
An officer then gave the suspect verbal commands to put his hands up. IMPD says the suspect instead pointed a handgun in the direction of nearby officers and at least one uninvolved citizen. That is when an officer fired their weapon, according to police.
The officer struck the suspect at least once before using a Taser and ordering the suspect to drop their weapon. Officers then reportedly ripped the gun from the suspect's hands and removed him from the vehicle. Officers provided medical assistance to the suspect until IEMS arrived and took him to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition.
IMPD says a handgun was found at the scene.
