Description
Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita claims a man arrested a second time for attempted rape in Bloomington is an illegal immigrant and that the Monroe County sheriff ignored a request from immigration authorities to hold him until he could be deported.
As 13News previously reported, Manuel Lopez Lopez, 39, was arrested and charged with attempted rape, criminal confinement and battery resulting in bodily injury. He is accused of trying to rape a woman on a walking trail on July 2, just months after he took a plea deal in a separate attempted rape case from last summer.
According to online court records, Lopez remained in jail from his arrest in that case on July 15, 2024, until he reached a plea deal with prosecutors in February 2025.
As part of the plea deal, the attempted rape and sexual battery charges were dismissed, and Lopez was sentenced to time served for criminal confinement. He was released from jail after his sentencing.
