One of Elitch Garden's classic rollercoasters is open for the first time in two years. The Denver amusement park said on Saturday that the Sidewinder, a steel-looping coaster, is "back in action." The ride closed in 2023. Since then, it's gotten an electrical system upgrade. "The ride required a replacement drive motor and control system, which required hard-to-find parts from a manufacturer that no longer exists," an Elitch Gardens spokesperson said. The Sidewinder is one of only three rides of its type left operating in the world. Elitch Gardens bought the ride and installed it in 1990 at the park's previous location. It was reconstructed at its current home in 1995. The downtown Denver amusement park, which is celebrating its 135th anniversary, said it will operate for its longest season in its history in 2025. Park officials said firework displays are on the schedule this summer, as well as Friday night dive-in movies in its wave pool. Elitch Gardens' water park opened Memorial Day weekend. The park's Halloween event, Fright Fest, will also return this fall for seven weekends in the autumn. Elitch Gardens said its winter-season festival with lights, entertainment and visits with Santa Claus will return during the holiday season. "This season is all about raising the bar and crafting unforgettable experiences that our guests will carry with them long after they leave," Elitch Gardens General Manager Rick Howarth said.
