Description
The driver convicted for hitting and killing a teen cyclist who was out on a training ride will be sentenced Friday morning in Boulder County.
On July 29, 2023, 17-year-old Magnus White, who was Team USA cyclist was riding along Highway 119 just past North 63rd Street when he was hit and killed by Yeva Smilianska.
In April, Smilianska was found guilty of vehicular homicide in connection with his death. Her sentencing hearing is set to begin at 10 a.m. She faces between two and six years behind bars.
Her defense team said she fell asleep while driving and argued that her actions were carless but not reckless and hoped the jury would convict her on the lesser charge.
But the prosecution painted a different picture of Smilianska. They said her actions were reckless because she knew she was tired, and she had other options that were safer than getting behind the wheel. Rather than take them, prosecutors said she failed her responsibility to other drivers and to White.
The jury ultimately sided with prosecutors and chose the more serious charge.
