Description
With more rain in the forecast this week, some South Tampa neighbors remain concerned over threats of flooding.
James Adair is among those whose homes flooded from Hurricane Milton and spent thousands of dollars in repairs.
He’s taking matter into his own hands by helping clear surrounding blockages to his neighborhood’s stormwater systems and trying to get to the root of the problem through his own research of the ditches, stormwater drains, and a nearby retention pond.
“This is my house. This is my family. I’ve lost eight months of my life waiting for this rehab, waiting permits, all of it,” Adair said.
The city of Tampa states it’s investing millions of dollars to enhance its stormwater systems and maintain them properly.
However, Adair remains skeptical. Other neighbors even more so after what’s been dubbed a 100 year rain event inundated parts of South Tampa last week.
Adair hopes his work sheds light on the ongoing issues he and others hope won’t exacerbate any major flooding this hurricane season.
“Much like the hurricanes, me finding a way to be helpful and being meaningful to my neighbors is my fuel,” Adair said.
Adair was named a “Hurricane Hero” by Rep. Kathy Castor for his work to support others following Hurricane Milton.
In addition to debris removal, the city states it is also upgrading its pump stations and installing portable generators.
