Description
A Citrus County deputy who was critically injured while on duty is now the namesake of a new Florida law that expands benefits for law enforcement officers who survive catastrophic injuries.
Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed the “Deputy Andy Lahera Act,” named after the well-liked deputy who was struck while directing traffic at a high school graduation in 2023.
Lahera suffered life-altering injuries, and his family soon discovered a gap in state law: while the families of fallen officers were eligible for medical coverage, those who survived with devastating injuries were not guaranteed the same.
“The one thing I said at the beginning,” said Lahera’s wife, Michelle. “I never wanted anybody to forget about Andy. And I wanted to make sure that he was going to be covered with insurance for the rest of his life.”
