Description
The dog days of summer have arrived — and the Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center is feeling the heat in more ways than one.
With 250 dogs currently housed inside the shelter and no air conditioning, staff are working around the clock to keep the animals safe and cool.
“Right now we have the fans going and everything else to help mitigate that, but because we are so overcrowded right now, we’re running,” said Chelsea Waldeck, Division Director at the Pet Resource Center.
While the dogs do have indoor and outdoor access, the building's extreme temperatures — coupled with an overcapacity population — have officials issuing an urgent plea for help. The shelter says it needs at least 50 foster homes immediately.
"We're doing all we can but could really use some help," a statement said.
