Description
Everybody needs a little oasis during hot weather. A place of refuge can be created beneath trees, on a covered patio or deck, or on an enclosed porch.
Use your creativity to make a space for resting, reading or entertaining. A comfortable chair or bench is all you need, along with potted plants that thrive in shade.
Haul your houseplants outside. Most low-light houseplants will burn in full sun but thrive in shade. The list of plants for a shady retreat is a long one. It includes umbrella tree, palms, ferns, ivy, Swedish ivy, philodendron, pothos, mother-in-law's tongue, jade plant, spider plant, peace lily and many more. All sorts of succulents will also grow happily in bright shade.
To make the area really special, add annual plants with great foliage and flowers. These include coleus, bloodleaf, sweet potato vine, impatiens and begonias. The combinations will create a lovely atmosphere when you're enjoying your private oasis.
