President Donald Trump said he authorized the CIA to carry out operations in Venezuela, citing drug trafficking and national security concerns.
Trump claimed that Venezuela “emptied its prisons into the United States” and said the country’s drug routes through the Caribbean Sea were part of the reason for the move.
“We’re going to stop them by land also,” Trump said, adding that other nations in the region are “feeling heat” from increased U.S. pressure.
The remarks came as the administration faces growing scrutiny over covert operations and border enforcement strategies.
