Description
A man is dead after Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said he charged at officers with a knife in a Pinellas Park short-term rental, slashing one in the shoulder before another officer shot and killed him.
Gualtieri said the incident started around 11:30 a.m. Sunday, when Pinellas Park police officers responded to the house on 82nd Avenue North after the homeowner called, asking to remove the man renting the house, who was refusing to leave.
Officers first encountered the man at the front door, and Gualtieri said he was holding a knife. He then barricaded the door and began a standoff with officers, the sheriff said.
After about two hours of attempting to talk him out of the house, the sheriff said a "contact team" with less-than-lethal beanbag guns and shields entered the home through the garage. Gualtieri said these officers were also carrying handguns as backup weapons.
Gualtieri said when the team encountered the man in the living room of the home, he was still holding the knife, and the officers fired the less-than-lethal rounds at him to no effect after commanding him to drop the knife.
The man then charged at officers with the knife, according to Gualtieri, slashing one, Cpl. Graham Fox, in the shoulder before another officer fired several rounds at him from his handgun, hitting him in the chest.
The man, later identified as 42-year-old Eric Ton, was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Gualtieri said Cpl. Fox received a minor laceration from the attack and is doing "fine."
The Use of Deadly Force Task Force is investigating the shooting.
