A dramatic rescue at Hersheypark is making headlines after a young boy was spotted walking along the closed monorail tracks on Saturday evening.
Video from the scene shows the boy high above the ground as concerned guests shouted from below.
John Sampson, of Bucks County, said he didn’t hesitate when he saw the child in danger.
“Dad instincts kicked in, and then [I was] just trying to figure things out and how to get up there as fast as possible,” Sampson said.
Sampson climbed onto the roof of a snack stand before pulling himself up onto the tracks. In front of a crowd holding its breath, he reached the boy and brought him safely down.
“[I felt] relief, absolute relief, and even I could feel it in him — the relief as soon as he got into my arms,” Sampson said. “Thank goodness he came straight into my arms, and it went nice and simply in that sense.”
According to Hershey Entertainment and Resorts, the boy had been reported missing around 5 p.m. Saturday. Park officials said he managed to enter the closed, secured monorail station before venturing onto the tracks.
“We are grateful for the vigilance of our guests and the swift response of our team, and we remain committed to the highest levels of guest safety throughout Hersheypark," the company said in a statement.
From the time the child was reported missing to the moment he was reunited with his family, only 23 minutes had passed, according to officials.
Sampson said the boy’s parents reached out to him the next morning to thank him for his quick action.
