Description
A University of Miami football player was taken into custody after Largo police filed charges for a May crash that left three people dead.
Adarius Hayes, the 20-year-old linebacker and Largo native, turned himself in after an arrest warrant was issued, charging him with three counts of vehicular homicide and one count of reckless driving with serious bodily injury. The charges are connected to the crash that happened on May 10 on Orangeview Drive and Ridge Road.
Hayes was driving a 2024 maroon Dodge Durango southbound on Ridge Road while 78-year-old Gail Price was driving a green Kia Soul northbound.
Hayes had a 19-year-old passenger in the front seat and a 16-year-old passenger in the back seat. In Price's car, Herbert Rivera, a 58-year-old man believed to have been in a relationship with Price, was in the front passenger seat while his child, 4-year-old Charlie Rivera, was in the back seat with 10-year-old Jabari Solomon, officials said.
Police said Hayes made a "rapid and dangerous maneuver," crossing over three lanes without signaling, and crashed into Price while she was trying to make a left-hand turn onto Orangeview Drive.
The 4-year-old and 10-year-old were ejected from the car and died at the scene. Price and Herbert Rivera were transported to the hospital, where Price died.
Hayes and one of his passengers were hospitalized after the crash but recovered.
Police said Hayes sped up from 70.8 mph to 78.9 mph in five seconds in a posted 40 mph zone when he crashed.
"The investigation concluded that Adarius Hayes' egregious speed, aggressive and reckless lane changes, and complete disregard for surrounding traffic conditions demonstrated a willful and deliberate disregard for the safety of others, constituting reckless driving," the release stated.
In a statement to 10 Tampa Bay News, University of Miami Athletics said Hayes has been indefinitely suspended from all athletic-related activities:
"Following the charges issued today by the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, student-athlete Adarius Hayes has been indefinitely suspended from all athletic related activities per athletic department policy. We will have no further comment."
Police said they are continuing to investigate. Largo Police Chief Mike Loux will give details on Hayes' arrest in a news conference at 2 p.m. You can watch it live on 10 Tampa Bay+.
