Description
A federal ICE agent was injured while trying to take a man into custody in Polk County, officials say.
According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, Denis Miranda, 21, is facing multiple felony charges, including battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest with violence, resisting arrest without violence, burglary of an occupied structure and false imprisonment.
On Tuesday, federal detectives reportedly learned that Miranda, who is from Nicaragua, was at Buccaneer Drive in Lakeland. Sheriff Grady Judd said a warrant had been issued for deportation, and ICE agents were sent to the scene.
When they arrived, Judd said Miranda got into a car with two other people and left. The agents followed him to Reynolds Road, where they conducted a traffic stop.
ICE agents told Miranda that they were going to take him into custody, but Judd said he tried to run. One of the agents grabbed him, "went to the ground with him," and they got into a fight that reportedly lasted around five minutes.
