Description
A former Polk County deputy who fled the country after being accused of DUI manslaughter is back in custody, Tampa police announced.
TPD, along with the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Apprehension Unit, arrested 36-year-old Joshua Roelofs after he didn't show up to court on April 21 for his charges.
Roelofs was charged with two counts of DUI manslaughter for a crash in 2022 that killed two people on the Courtney Campbell Causeway.
After not appearing in court, investigators determined Roelofs had gone to Colombia.
On Monday, Aug. 11, U.S. Marshals were able to contact Colombian authorities and pinpoint Roelofs' location at a hotel in Antioquia. Authorities took him into custody without incident.
On Tuesday, Colombian authorities escorted Roelofs on a flight to Miami International Airport, where he was met by TPD's fugitive Apprehension Unit.
He was taken into custody and transported to Orient Road Jail, where he is currently held without bond.
“This arrest is a significant step toward justice for the victims of the fatal crash, which tragically claimed the lives of two individuals,” Chief Lee Bercaw said in a statement. "The apprehension also sends a clear and resounding message that the Tampa Police Department will tirelessly pursue justice, no matter how far a fugitive runs. This outcome is a testament to the dedication of our investigators and the power of strong law enforcement partnerships.”
A previous arrest affidavit shows that Roelofs was a former deputy for the Polk County Sheriff's Office from 2010 to 2015.
He was arrested and later fired from PCSO after trying to defraud the agency by falsifying his time card, the affidavit said.
