Description
Sept. 5 on The Story: In a recent newsletter sent out to his mailing list, Portland Mayor Keith Wilson had a bit of an unusual ask. In the middle of executing on his campaign promise to end unsheltered homelessness by setting up a network of overnight shelters, Wilson called on the public to pitch in with donations and by volunteering. He also invoked the Trump administration threats to send in federal law enforcement and National Guard troops to the city, depicting it as something that could happen if Portlanders don't step up of their own accord. But after a budget crisis and amid ongoing debates about the tax burden and cost of living in Portland, the request rubbed some city officials the wrong way.
