Description
Aug. 12 on The Story: Appearing before Portland City Council's housing and homelessness committee today, Mayor Keith Wilson gave a presentation laying out his six primary goals; which include putting a stop to tent handouts, reconnecting some homeless people with loved ones, and stepping up efforts to clean up the city streets. But the flagship of Wilson's program is still the opening of overnight shelter beds, 630 of which he expects to be up and running by the end of the summer. His ambitious goal was to get 1,500 open in his first year. Some of the new shelter beds are already going empty, but Wilson argues that that's precisely what they need — at least 200 beds empty at any given time before winter weather starts driving people indoors.
