Description
Nearly two years into Israel's deadly offensive in Gaza following Hamas' Oct. 7 attack, President Donald Trump says a ceasefire proposal crafted by his administration is the closest we've gotten to ending the Israel-Hamas war.
In the past, several peace plans have fallen through. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he agrees with the plan. Hamas has yet to respond.
I spoke with Dr. Hilary Kalisman, Associate Professor of History and Endowed Professor of Israel-Palestine Studies at CU Boulder, who says the main goal of the 20-point plan is to end the war as soon as possible.
As an overview, the plan demands that Hamas release all hostages in exchange for Israel's release of Palestinian prisoners. Hamas could then be granted amnesty if it disarms, and Israel would withdraw from Gaza to be replaced by an international force.
She said some less concrete but still crucial points include a renewed influx of aid and that Israel would no longer annex regions or expel Palestinians. However, questions remain — including whether Palestinians will have a say on how they're governed and what a durable solution to the conflict will be.
