Description
At the WWL-TV Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Debate, candidates weighed in on one of the most contentious issues: immigration enforcement.
The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office is under a consent decree that limits cooperation with federal immigration detainers.
Here’s how the candidates responded:
Constable Edwin Shorty said protecting citizens comes first and pledged to work with federal partners.
Sheriff Susan Hutson argued federal law trumps state law, and taxpayers shouldn’t foot the bill for holding people on low-level offenses.
Michelle Woodfork said she’ll follow the law at every level but stressed the sheriff’s main job is custody and care of the jail.
