Description
This is another sad form of illegal fishing practice performed all over the world and these images are taken in the Sea of Cortez, Baja California Sur, Mexico. Once the sea is depleted of fish using long lines & drift gill nets, the next easy method to catch fish is to dive from small boats called pangas on compressed air from a compressor at the surface supplying air to a two diver team. This method is known as Hoodah diving and in particular these specialty fishermen are known as night spear fishermen. They deploy at night fall when fish go into hiding in the rocks and are essentially sleeping...the fishermen shine lights on them, blinding the fish and next spear them with a Hawaiian Sling. Not only is this an illegal method of fishing and often practiced in marine parks and sanctuaries, but in a matter of a few days, one team of fishermen can deplete a complete small island of all it's fish. Thus taking many years or more to come back to a healthy population....if ever.
