Kathy Maness, executive director of the Palmetto State Teacher's Association says she supports parts of the Read to Succeed Legislation moving through the general assembly.
It creates a Read to Succeed office at the State department of education and an expert panel to help districts and schools improve reading.
She also likes the idea of summer reading camps for students who struggle and more training for teachers --- but wonders about the cost to districts to run the camps and the expense for some teachers to pay for extra courses that she says could cost at least 7 thousand dollars.

The bill would also retain some students after the third grade if they don't do well in reading... Something Maness says all teachers don't agree on.
Bamberg County Democrat Bakari Sellers sponsored the house version of the bill last week with a senate version introduced by republicans last month.
Sellers says he knows parts of the bill may need some tweaking, but the intent of the bill is solid.
