Testimony has begun in a downtown Houston courtroom for a suspect accused of killing another man for his Nike Air Jordans shoes in 2012.
Neal Bland will appear in court again Tuesday, charged with capital murder in the death of 22-year-old Joshua Woods.
Court records show two other suspects in the case are scheduled to go on trial later in February.
Investigators say Woods was gunned down for his shoes after he and a friend purchased them at the Willowbrook Mall on the launch date of the latest addition.
Daren Taylor was found guilty of capital murder for his involvement in the death of Joshua Woods in 2012.
The mother of a teen accused of killing another teen over a pair of Air Jordans confronted the victim's family outside a Harris County courtroom Wednesday.
Juan Reyna was gunned down just shy of his 17th birthday. His father says he was fatally shot over his Air Jordan sneakers.
"My family doesn't buy shoes like that anymore," Reyna said. "They buy the shoes for what? For you to take them away? For you to kill that child for those shoes? No sir."
He's reminded of that lesson every time more violence erupts over the expensive shoes. Reyna's son dreamed of becoming a state trooper one day.
"Never had that chance," Reyna said. "There's no need for that."
He said there's no need for another life to end because of a fashion statement.
"Stop this nonsense. Stop this nonsense," he said.
In an unrelated but similar case, testimony began Tuesday in a downtown Houston courtroom for the suspect accused of killing another young man for his Nike Air Jordan shoes in 2012.
